“Yo soy Betty, la fea” is one of the most successful Colombian novels in the world, having been broadcast in 180 countries, dubbed into 25 languages, and had at least 28 adaptations.
Although the last broadcast took place in 2001, we still remember the characters well, and even more so since they announced the recording of the sequel to the novel, which can be seen on Prime Video.
For this reason, Natalia Ramírez, who played Marcela Valencia, and Julio César Herrera, who gave life to Freddy Stewart Contreras, were recently interviewed in the program “What happened?” from Tele Medellín, and there they told several details that were not known about Betty’s recording.

Host Diego Peña asked the actors which guest was the most difficult to deal with during the recording. Although they thought about the answer for a while, they both agreed on Cecilia Bolocco.

“The one we suffered the most from was Cecilia. I’ll tell you why. The lady was changing in the dressing room and dropped a diamond into the toilet. We had to call in a plumber to take it apart… The diamond was lost and the lady was crying and cursing.“, revealed Natalia Ramírez.
Then Herrera spoke up and revealed that she had to give her a 40-minute special in which she was Ugly Betty. “Then the director of the novel, Mario Ribero, told me, ‘Julio, you direct it, I’m leaving’. And he went and said he was going to direct me,” he said.
“She wanted to tell the story that she was the ugly duckling and ended up being Miss Universe.”Ramírez concluded.
Cecilia Bolocco spoke about her participation in “Ugly Betty”
In 2002, in an interview with the media “BioBioChile”, Bolocco recalled the scene he recorded for the soap opera. Furthermore, he revealed that this was done in a single shot.
“It so happened that my visit came at a key moment in the series, when Betty realized she was being deceived, And in the midst of her desolation, she meets the supposed beauty queen who is visiting Colombia and Betty tells her that she has never been able to understand what is happening to her: that they despise her and humiliate her because she is ugly,” she commented.

She said that Screenwriter Fernando Gaitán asked her to appear in Betty’s office to give her advice as if they were lifelong friends. “I said ‘Perfect, give me 15 minutes and I’ll be ready’ and I did it. “I told him exactly how I felt and it was something magical, we did it in one take,” he said.
Finally, she said that she and Ana María Orozco were touched by the scene. “What I wanted to convey was that pain has no face, but is universal: we all suffer from the same thing. It was a wonderful experience. “I have very fond memories,” he concluded.
