Homeless people’s everyday lives are threatened by the cold, while the shelters that help them are overcrowded.

“We expect a shortage of places in emergency shelters, but above all a lack of places in adapted accommodation”: the head of the rescue service at the Old Brewery Mission acknowledges that the cold will make things difficult.

“If we cannot help people find housing more efficiently and quickly, it will be difficult to manage,” adds Émilie Fortier.

Residents of makeshift camps both in Montreal and in the regions are very concerned about the “difficult” circumstances.

A report released by the Ministry of Health and Social Services confirms that the number of homeless people in the province is increasing and exceeds 10,000.

The city of Montreal is “exerting unprecedented pressure in several areas of the city and teams are supporting the health network that is coordinating the addition of spaces across the city.”
