Last year, despite the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, remittances accounted for 17.8 percent of gross domestic product, compared to 14.6 percent in 2020.

According to the Monetary, Foreign Exchange and Credit Policy Assessment Document, the rise has accelerated over the past decade, particularly between 2015 and 2019 and in 2021.

Seven departments concentrated 54 percent of the money, Guatemala, Huehuetenango, San Marcos, Quetzaltenango, Petén, Alta Verapaz and Quiché.

Its main goal is spending on domestic consumption to meet unmet basic needs such as food, education and improvement, or building houses, among others.
