The conductor had sarcastically “complimented” (without naming him) the judge, who released Gessica Notaro’s ex and then scarred him with acid

“I’m not commenting on the sentences, they speak for themselves. All I know is that I defended a young woman who was scarred and lost an eye as a result.” Maurizio Costanzo, 84, told Corriere della Sera that the Ancona court had sentenced him to a year’s imprisonment with a suspended sentence , subject to the payment of 40,000 euros in compensation for defamation against the coroner he supervised by Gessica Notaro, acid scars from ex-boyfriend Edson Tavares.

During the episode of his «Maurizio Costanzo Show», broadcast on April 20, 2017, the presenter had received Gessica Notaro, who answered Costanzo’s questions, traced the stages of his dramatic history and recalled how the coroner had asked about Tavares, the Notaro had already reported stalking, only a restraining order and not, as requested by the prosecutor, house arrest. «I reported him in the hope that he would finish it – Gessica had said –. I would like to know why the prosecution decided that he should be arrested and the coroner only gave him house arrest duties instead.

Costanzo had taken on the defense of the young woman and ironically “complimented” the judge: “Congratulations to this coroner – commented the conductor – should we name the coroner who did this? I would like to congratulate the coroner. I say to the CSM (the Supreme Council of Justice, editor’s note): offer my compliments to the magistrate who decided this.” The name of the robe – Vinicio Cantarini, on duty at the Rimini court – had never actually been mentioned by Costanzo, but the reference was clear. So much so that the judge first warned Costanzo (who invited him on the show and offered him the right to an answer) and then sued him.

A lawsuit was accepted, which led to Costanzo’s conviction, although the conductor’s lawyers had insisted that there was no libelous intent in their client’s words and in any event they announced that they would appeal. In the few words that Costanzo reports to the “Corriere”, there is also a request to take note of research published by the newspaper “Libero” at the kiosk today. According to the newspaper, the authors of the study, professors Pieremilio Sammarco and Vincenzo Zeno-Zencovich, examined all of the approximately 700 judgments issued by the Rome Court of Justice in 2015-2020 in matters of defamation.

The acceptance rates were only 36%, with a total amount of compensation of around 20,000 euros. However, when the complaint was filed by a judge, the prison sentences increased to almost 80%, with an amount of compensation of around 40,000 euros, higher than the average of the amounts awarded to any other category (politicians, professionals, entrepreneurs, doctors, university professors). , journalists).
