French actor Alain Delon and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke on screens from Kyiv and Paris on Friday, September 23, at the conclusion of the program “Face à Zelensky” broadcast on TV5 Monde.
An extraordinary interview between Volodymyr Zelensky and Alain Delon was broadcast on TV5 Monde on Friday, September 23. On intermediary screens, the President of Ukraine from Kyiv and the French actor from Paris exchanged views at the end of the program “Face à Zelensky”.
The Ukrainian leader, who used to be an actor himself, expressed his admiration for Alain Delon. “I’ve never been such a great actor as you. To me you are still an authority and a great actor,” he said. “I will never be a president as brilliant and deserving as you are,” replied the 86-year-old French star.
“I would be 50 years younger, I would join the Ukrainian army”
During this exchange “recorded a few days ago”, Alain Delon publicly supported Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people. “I’m sorry for you. I would be 50 years younger, I would join the Ukrainian army,” he told TV5 Monde. “They did nothing to provoke this war. There are things I don’t understand and I don’t accept this war. When I see these people die, these children die, these animals die, it disgusts me,” the French actor, who said he was “deeply saddened” by the war in Ukraine, lamented to the Ukrainian president. “It’s a one man dream, not the dream of a country or a nation,” he added.
“He [en faisant référence à Vladimir Poutine, sans jamais le citer, ndlr] thinks that we are part of his world,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded to the actor’s words. “Perhaps he wants the return of the Soviet Union (…) and anyone who stands in his way is cannon fodder. He knows exactly how many people die every day, but it’s part of his plan. It’s a colonialist approach,” the Ukrainian president condemned on the French-language international channel.
At the end of the interview, the head of state invited Alain Delon to a meeting in Kyiv. “I’ll come when I have fewer sticks and can walk normally. It won’t be long because it’s worth the trip and I’m not afraid,” the actor promised. “We will wait for you, it was a great honor for me to meet you,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy concluded, emphasizing the importance of French society’s support to Ukraine. And this while since Friday, September 23, referenda have been organized by pro-Russian separatists in Donbass. Referenda widely denounced by the international community and Kyiv.
