The son of one of Brazil’s greatest voices, Gabriel Costa, 17, who lost his mother Gal Costa last week, gave his first interview of his life to Fantástico last Sunday (13), surprising the artist’s fans.
Shyly, the teenager revealed he only understood his mother’s importance to culture after her death, which is why he agreed to opening the wake to fans.
“I just had a vision that she was my mother and only mine, and I had no vision of her dimension as a singer. I didn’t realize that until her funeral. That’s why I came here, I thought, ‘I also have to think about the other people who loved my mother, they deserve to see a little more of their lives.’ So who could say more about her life than her son?”
From very different eras, Gabriel reveals that he has always admired his mother’s voice and pointed out one of the most striking qualities of the Bahian woman: “I would go on the show if she played that high note. I think that was the best part of her voice, the high pitch that a lot of people just can’t pull off.”
Away from the music, Gabriel gave Gal’s fans a little bit of what the singer was like at home as a mom, an image he’s known since he was two years old. “In terms of the school, the lessons, we sort of had an agreement. That I do my responsibilities, they do theirs. As long as I got through the year… It was great.”
In the interview, the boy also said that he regretted the distance between them during puberty. Gabriel says he didn’t enjoy the time with Gal. “I don’t think I took advantage of my mother’s presence here very much. When I got home I didn’t spend much time talking to her and my godmother. I went straight to my room. I played, watched a series. I think I should have enjoyed it more.”
If being known as Gal Costa’s son all his life has been uncomfortable for the young man because of the fame it could bring him, the thought is different at the moment. “It’s something that I kind of… I didn’t really like it. (…) I have to be proud, right, to be Gal Costa’s son.”

Speaking to the Fantástico reporter, Gabriel also revealed that his musical tastes are beyond what Gal showcased on stage, but when they met musically, they were with songs by the artist herself, like the 2015 album Estratoférica. .
“My style of music was completely different from theirs. She didn’t particularly like the songs I listened to, no. It’s funk, it’s trap, music very different from MPB. Sometimes I would put on a song that we both liked. But usually it was always hers.”
As for the most recent one, Gabriel’s favorite song was one of the last unreleased songs released by Gal, the partnership “Cuidando de Longe” with Marília Mendonça. “Sometimes she would come into my room and I would listen to this song. She smiles, she doesn’t say much, but she smiles. Or she would enter the room and start eavesdropping.”
