Jim CareyFile photo – “I would have sued him for $200 million,” says Jim Carrey of Will Smith’s hit.

Actor Jim Carrey slammed Hollywood for cheering on Will Smith for winning the Best Actor Oscar half an hour after beating comedian Chris Rock live after making a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith.

Speaking to Gayle King for CBS, Carrey expressed disgust at the situation. “The big ovation disgusts me. Hollywood doesn’t have character when it’s in a group, and I really felt like that was a clear indication that we’re not the cool club anymore.

According to Jim Carrey, Will Smith should have been removed from the ceremony after the slap. The actor also stated that if he had stood in Chris Rock’s shoes, he would have sued his attacker for $200 million “because this video is going to be there forever and it’s going to be everywhere. This insult will last a long time.”

“If you want to shout out from the audience and show your disapproval or say something on Twitter, that’s fine. But you don’t have the right to go on stage and slap someone in the face for saying a few words.”

The actor noted that the slap came from a frustration in Will Smith.

“I have nothing against him. He’s done a lot of great things, but it wasn’t a good time. It overshadowed everyone’s bright moments that night… it was a selfish moment.

Finally, a day after the ceremony, Will Smith apologized to Chris Rock for his actions, saying, “He crossed the line.” But the public apology will further the investigation the Academy has launched into the incident, the consequences of which are still unknown, don’t stop.
