IACHR calls on the United States and Mexico to guarantee rights to the refugee caravan

MIAMI.- The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) already called the United States Mexico to comply with their international protection obligations and due process without discriminating against the caravan Migrants that are approaching their limits.

In this sense, he said on Friday, December 29, that immediate assistance and humanitarian assistance for migrants must be guaranteed.

The IACHR said it is monitoring the progress of a refugee caravan of about 10,000 people reaching the Mexico-Mexico border UNITED STATES. He pointed out that this caravan represents a challenge to ensuring and respecting the human rights of the people who make it up.

“States must cooperate to ensure safe, regular and orderly human mobility in accordance with the provisions of IACHR Resolution No. 04/19,” the Inter-American Commission stressed.

On December 27, it was announced that a caravan of 7,000 migrants, most of them from Central America and the Caribbean, had arrived in the municipality of Villa Comaltitlán in the Mexican state of Chiapas. It became known that this caravan applied for humanitarian visas from the National Migration Institute (INM) and the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance. However, they protested after not receiving a positive response.

IACHR advocates for migrants

On December 18th, the day of migrant, The IACHR explained that human mobility is a multi-causal phenomenon “because people move due to a combination of displacement factors in origin countries and attraction factors in destination countries.”

In this way, according to the Inter-American Commission, these movements take place in a context characterized or exacerbated by economic, political, social reasons and/or by the effects of climate change and natural disasters. This indicates this IACHR, impacts conditions of displacement and vulnerability along human mobility routes.
