Ibero American ministers are committed to sustainability and educational equity

Santo Domingo, 26 November (EFE).- Ministers and representatives of the education sector from fourteen Ibero-American countries attended the XXXVIII. Ibero-American Conference of the Holders of this Portfolio, emphasizing sustainability, inclusion and equity in education as key challenges.

During the meeting in Santo Domingo, topics such as inclusive, fair, safe and healthy schools were discussed; Learning and skills for life, work and sustainable development, and educators, teaching and the teaching profession.

The Secretary General of the Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (OIE) of the Iberoamerican States (OIE), Mariano Jabonero, stressed in his opening speech the imperative to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 17 (alliances between the different actors to achieve these goals) SDG4, the guarantees inclusive, equitable and quality education and promotes lifelong learning opportunities for all.

The assembly was attended by the fourteen representatives of the education sector, including the Spanish Minister of Education, Pilar Alegría, who, in statements to EFE, indicated the advisability of holding these meetings to exchange experiences, especially “after a health crisis (…) to see how different countries have met this challenge”.

“Something that all countries share as a fundamental challenge is to improve equity in the education system and reduce inequality,” said the minister, as she explained during her presentation.

He noted that another “fundamental and priority” issue raised at the meeting was teacher education.

Alegría conveyed to her colleagues the educational reform that is being carried out in Spain, “with a more competence-based curriculum and the importance of continuing to improve resources” in order to, given the heterogeneity, “realize a more inclusive education that we want to guarantee”. the students.

The digital transformation that education systems have been undergoing as a result of the pandemic was another topic discussed at the meeting, which attaches particular importance to professional education and the new methods introduced for teachers and students, he stressed.

This Saturday’s event, organized by the Dominican Ministry of Education and the Pro Tempore Secretariat of the country’s Ibero-American Conference in conjunction with the Ibero-American General Secretariat, is part of the calendar of events of the XXVIII. Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, which will take place on March 24th and 25th under the motto “Together for a Fair and Sustainable Ibero-America”. EFE
