Iberoamerica Calls for Comprehensive and Sustainable Food Security

Santo Domingo, April 29.- The XI. In its final declaration today, the Ibero-American Conference of Agriculture Ministers called for an integrative and sustainable food security in the region.

In the statement, participants agreed to work towards a model that meets the prevailing needs of 60 million food insecure people in the region and that champions innovation and technology and reduces the environmental impact of the sector.

Likewise, participants advocated a reorganization that promotes a set of joint actions around a common roadmap that drives the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Another aspect reflected in the document was the decision to advocate for increasing productive capacity and diversity, access to means of production, technological developments including digitization and education as a basis for overcoming exclusion.

And bring about systemic change that addresses global challenges such as climate change, social inequality and gender gaps, significantly increasing investment in science, technology and innovation.

In addition, establish results-oriented cooperative agreements between the Ibero-American Departments of Agriculture, support programs for food and nutrition education and strengthen family farms.

Finally, the representatives of the 22 countries present adopted a resolution in support of food security and sustainable development in Haiti, calling on the international community and other political actors to work towards a solution to the serious humanitarian situation in that country.

The conclave was part of the Dominican Republic’s calendar of activities within the framework of the Pro Tempore Secretariat of this international organization, the results of which will be published at the XXVIII. The Ibero-American summit of heads of state and government takes place in Germany under the motto “Together for a fair and sustainable Ibero-America”.
