The Kazakhs, who failed to win a single game in their six games, were not easy prey. They equalized a two-goal deficit late in the game, but Yasin Ehliz scored the winning goal for the Germans.
Leonhard Pfoderl, Lukas Reichel, Jonas Müller and Daniel Fischbuch were the other scorers for Germany, who at the end of the preliminary round are now the first in Group A to meet the Swiss.
For their part, Canada have two more games ahead of them, against Denmark and France.
Latvians go back
In Group B, Latvia, two goals behind, defeated Great Britain 4-3.
Elvis Merzlikins was ejected from the game after he threw 13 shots from the Latvian side three times. Arturs Silovs was perfect after that and made six saves.
Former Rouyn-Noranda Huskies Martins Dzierkals excelled in the win with three assists.
