The year 2024 started with a bang for Netflix. On January 4th, the streaming giant released Juan Antonio Bayona's latest production “The Circle of Snows” online. The success was immediately noticeable for the audience! And for good reason, this achievement is inspired by one of the most horrific and famous plane crashes, that of Fuerza Aérea Uruguaya Flight 571. In 1972, the plane – carrying 45 passengers – including crew members and the Montevideo rugby union team – crashed in the Andes. Yellowjackets, this series is inspired by the drama of the Andes

It is in 2021 that the first episode of Yellow jackets is broadcast on American television. And if viewers were quickly swept away by the fiction, it is because it is freely inspired by the terrible drama of the Andes. The story takes place in 1996, when a team of young female soccer players from New Jersey travel to Seattle for a tournament. But everything changes when the plane carrying them crashes in the middle of nature. Lost in the middle of nowhere, the young women make all sorts of attempts at survival – including cannibalism – before being rescued nineteen months after their disappearance.

Yellowjackets, a double temporality that emphasizes intrigue

The distinctiveness of the series based on this tragedy lies essentially in the double temporality created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson. Not only do viewers witness the plane crash and follow the young women in their fight for survival, but several years later, as adults, they also find them still deeply traumatized by the tragedy they experienced. . “Yellowjackets” is therefore a clever mix of the series “Lost”, the novel “His Majesty of the Flies” and the terrible true story of the Andes crash, carried by the great performance of actresses Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci, Tawny Cypress and Juliette Lewis.
