IKG Vienna: Religious community celebrates the Jewish New Year Rosh Hashanah Vienna

Currently, we wish Jews a Happy New Year as they celebrate Rosh Hashanah and with it the beginning of a new year.

VIENNA. From the evening of Friday, September 15th, until the evening of Sunday, September 17th, Jews around the world will celebrate Rosh Hashanah. The New Year celebrates the creation of the world and also marks the beginning of a new year in the Jewish calendar. For Jews, the year 5784 after the creation of the world now begins. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, which is most used around the world, the Jewish calendar is based on the phases of the moon.

As is customary with Jewish holidays, celebrations begin in the evening. Rosh Hashanah also begins the ten-day period of reflection before Yom Kippur, the great day of atonement, is celebrated on September 24th.

Sweets for a sweet new year

A traditional Rosh Hashanah dish is challah. This is a dough made with yeast dough twisted into a braid. The braid is made in a circle and is intended to symbolize the cycle of one year. For a “sweet” – that is, good – New Year, challah is eaten with honey.

Rosh Hashanah is celebrated with family and friends. At the turn of the year, Jews wish each other “Shana Tova!”, that is, “Happy New Year”. Oskar Deutsch, President of the Jewish Community of Vienna, sent his congratulations to the community via video message.

There was also a Jewish New Year concert in Vienna for seven years. This year it took place for the second time at the Konzerthaus in Vienna. A string quartet composed of young musicians from the Israel Philharmonic organized the first part of the evening. Then Tom Borrow showed off his piano skills.
