I’m a wine expert and here’s why you should NEVER put the cork in a bottle of wine again

It should probably happen more often than it actually does… but there are times when at the end of a night you twist the cork back into the bottle.

But stop! Whether you return a cork, unscrew a cap, or use that fancy clip bottle stopper you picked up on that fancy vineyard tour, your wine will still be undrinkable after a few days.

Now, a sommelier has revealed the clever trick she “swears” by to keep her wine tasting fresher longer after opening the bottle.

A wine expert took to TikTok to show people how to ensure an opened bottle of wine stays fresher longer and not a single drop of it goes to waste No matter how much wine is left in the bottle, it's never a good idea to reseal it

As Warner, who goes by @confidentuncorked, shared her advice with the world, she told her followers that it might “sound crazy,” but you should never “put the cork back in the bottle.”

No matter how much wine is left in the bottle, it’s never a good idea to reseal it.

Instead, she said she has a “much better tip” that’s both life-changing and mind-blowing.

The wine educator explained, “If you put the cork back on a half-empty bottle of wine, you would find that half of it still contained oxygen.”

As she showed her bottle to her followers, she went on to explain, “Corks are porous.”

“This still gets oxygen into your wine — not great.”

Instead, she recommended “reducing the ratio of oxygen to wine.”

Low exposure to oxygen can result in deeper, more complex aromas that can even improve the quality of wines.

But too much exposure has the opposite effect – it destroys the complex aromas, flavor and even color. Then the wine is considered oxidized.

The TikToker went on to say that she recommends a mason jar to prevent this and thus save your wine.

The wine expert added that you can of course decant your wine into different sized mason jars depending on how much you have left

As she demonstrated how it works, she said, “All you have to do is take the leftover wine and pour it into the mason jar or other airtight container.”

She urged her followers to seal it properly and securely to prevent oxygen from entering.

She revealed why this method is better than popping the cork back open, saying that “there’s so much less oxygen in there.” [the jar]than in the rest of the bottle.’

She added, “I swear it will keep your wine tasting fresh a few days after opening it.”

“Because the day after I’ve opened a bottle of wine and put the cork back on, I can tell the difference.”

The wine expert added that you can of course transfer your wine to different sized mason jars depending on how much you have left.

In a separate comment, she said you could keep your wine “a week, maybe longer” using this method.

While many TikTok users were shocked by the prospect of wine being left over, others were excited by the hack.

One person wrote, “Just tried it and highly recommend it.” Will do so from now on. Thank you for the great content.’

And a second sentence: “If I ever have wine left, I’ll try it.” It hasn’t happened yet, but who knows.”

Another TikTok user said, ‘I just learned that!’ Good point!!!’

While others joked: “Wine left over? Never heard of it..’

And a second sentence: “Leftover wine.” I’ve read about it but never experienced it. I thought it was an urban myth!’

And a third comedian said, “I believe in the tooth fairy before the wine is left.”
