An imam from Newark, near New York, was seriously injured by gunfire on Wednesday morning and was hospitalized in critical condition, police in that city in New Jersey state said.

According to an email from the Newark Public Safety Press Office, police responded at dawn after a man was shot by one or more gunshots outside the mosque in this industrial and multicultural city.
“The victim was transported to University Hospital and, according to the information, is in a critical summer,” said Fritz Fragé, director of public safety in Newark, without saying anything about the possible motive for this ball attack.
Her spokesman confirmed to AFP that the man, whom she did not identify, “is actually the imam” of that city west of Manhattan across the Hudson River and that “the incident occurred outside the mosque.”
“We are deeply concerned about this incident and pray for the Imam's speedy recovery,” condemned the New Jersey chapter of the organization for the defense of Islam and American Muslims, Council on American-Islamic Relations (Cair).
