The first thing that catches the attention of the entertaining Italian series Imma Tataranni (La 1 and RTVE Play) is the context in which the investigations of the substitute prosecutor take place: the Basilicata region and especially Matera, one of the most important cities of the territory , a context that once again shows respect for the preservation of the architectural heritage. It is likely that this respect is partly due to the area’s traditional isolation, but the traveler visiting the very touristy city of Rome will be surprised to find that this respect is the same. If the traveler also comes from Spain, the astonishment is joined by the surprise that one can survive in the cities without wild real estate speculation.
Prosecutor Tataranni is an odd mix of Italian clichés – passionate, loud, familiar… – with a rough personality and a fondness for colorful clothing, without compromising her tenacity in solving the region’s murders. He has a very different personality from the quiet Inspector Montalbano, although both display excellent professional efficiency.
The series of the prosecutor of Matera seeks more sociological information than that of the commissioner of the Sicilian and imaginary vigata. Tataranni’s husband, mother-in-law, mother and teenage daughter all undergo significant development in the series, as does his assistant, the shy police officer Ipazzio Calogiuri, and they fit some traditional profiles: rebellious daughter, hostile mother-in-law, mother-in-law Alzheimer’s and a faithful husband, whether for love or fear, without despising corrupt politicians, controlling bosses or lovesick secretaries. In addition to entertaining, Imma Tataranni wants to show a mosaic of the times we live in.
