A hospital in Donbass, on the Russian-controlled side, is just a few kilometers from the front. Civilians are being treated inside, but so are Russian soldiers.
In Donbass, in the Russian-controlled zone, there is a frontline hospital just a few kilometers from the frontline. The France Télévisions teams were able to film there, but on condition that they not reveal the exact location for fear of filming. A man in his 70s had his home hit and his wife died. “She was under the rubble. She was trying to run to the toilet at the time of the explosion. I was told that their legs were broken,” said Viktor, an injured civilian.
Two years of fiercer fighting
In the next room, another civilian lost his leg. The war in Donbass began in 2014. But in the last two years the fighting has become even more intense and the injuries even more serious. The hospital also receives Russian soldiers who speak of fear. “We are people like everyone else, everyone is afraid,” says a wounded Russian soldier anonymously. The wounded know that it is not impossible that they will return to the front to fight. “If it’s mandatory, I’ll go back,” says Pavel, an injured mobilized soldier. In Russia, desertion is punishable by prison.
