Madrid, April 19 (Prensa Latina) Science fiction novels and films are now crossing borders, with the mainstreaming of artificial intelligence (AI) also among the development challenges in Latin America.

The Organization of the Iberoamerican States for Education, Science and Culture (OEI) and ProFuturo presented the report The Future of Artificial Intelligence in Education in Latin America at the Casa de América in Madrid.

AI is an increasingly growing trend in modern society and also poses a challenge to the development models of a region hard hit by the pandemic, where 180 million children, adolescents and young people lived without access to study centers and confined to their homes were.

An assessment shared by Mariano Jabonero, Secretary General of the OEI, Magdalena Brier, Director General of ProFuturo, and the former head of ECLAC and the Iberoamerican Secretariat, Enrique Iglesias.

“Artificial intelligence will play a significant role in education in aspects that are already being explored in the region, such as intelligent tutoring or new assessment models, but also in others to be explored, such as predicting early school leaving or strengthening the personalization of learning. ‘ commented Jabonero.

In the midst of a panorama in which AI also breaks in as a destabilizing element with fake images and graphics that distort reality, the so-called ChatGPT, a chatbot prototype, is gaining momentum.

Currently seen as a disruptive or highly dangerous tool for educational standards, with 100 million current users, it could negatively impact the level of educational development, which Brier says makes its regulation or oversight commendable.

In the report presented by the OEI, experts predict that AI will have a profound impact on education in the region, although only 40 percent say this technology will help reduce the education gaps within countries.

Although artificial intelligence will gradually play a larger role at all levels of education, it will have greater relevance in higher education.

For her part, Carme Artigas, Secretary of State for Digitization and Artificial Intelligence of Spain, stressed the fundamental role of nations in regulating and accompanying the development of these technologies.

He indicated that the Spanish Presidency of the European Union, starting July 1, will be an opportunity to promote relations between Madrid and Latin America, also in terms of artificial intelligence, “promoting this technology in Spanish”.

“Now the AI development appears mainly in English and Chinese. Let’s consider that we are in a moment of dominance of Generation D, the digital generation that will outperform everyone else and shape the course of our lives in an already present future,” Artigas reflects.
