Impact on the salary cap of the Rams trading Robert Woods

Last week, the Los Angeles Rams took steps to make room in the cap by earning money by renewing Matthew Stafford, removing Johnny Hecker and trading Robert Woods.

They send a veteran wide receiver to the Titans in exchange for a sixth-round pick in 2023, which is surprisingly low for a starter. But with Woods turning 30 next month and having a torn ACL, the Rams apparently couldn’t do better.

The reason they made this move was to make room in the cap. According to Spotrac, the Rams saved $7.1 million for $8.6 million in dead money. That’s better than if they cut Woods, which would have given them a $3.6 million savings.

The Titans will inherit Woods’ contract, which runs until 2025. In 2022, they will receive his $13.5 million cap, which is admittedly a pretty high number for a 30-year-old wide receiver who is recovering from an ACL tear.

But still, the fact that the Titans had to forfeit a sixth-round pick the following year to get the No. 2 wide receiver is a win for Tennessee, regardless of his cap.

Now we have to wait and see what the Rams do with that money. They could still sign Odell Beckham Jr, but they will likely turn to defense after losing Von Miller, Darius Williams, Sebastian Joseph-Day and Ogbonnia Okoronquo.
