Thanks to an improvised medical team consisting of a nurse, an intern and an outside medic who were fortunately on board the plane, a baby was born mid-flight on Monday when the woman reportedly smelled labor.
A baby boy was born on board an Air Caraïbes plane during a flight between Paris and Fort-de-France in Martinique, France Info Martinique 1 reported on Wednesday.
The employee reportedly made an announcement just an hour after landing, asking if there were paramedics on board the plane. At that point, a nurse and two medical students, an intern and an external, would have stood up to help.
By the time they landed, staff finally announced the birth of the baby to the passengers, baffled because they hadn’t heard anything, and told them to remain seated to make way for a doctor, the confidant said the French media.
On the plane, according to France Info Martinique 1, there would have been thunderous applause for the mother and baby, who are doing well, as would be the custom with many companies.
Giving birth on board an aircraft is rather rare, as pregnant women are usually only admitted after the 36th week of pregnancy, according to the French media.
