In a neighborhood of Trois-Rivières – the lynx still arouses curiosity

The lynx sighted on Wednesday afternoon in the middle of the residential area of Trois-Rivières still arouses curiosity. Several people still crossed the surrounding streets hoping to see him again.

He spent a few hours in a small wooded area right next to the Jacques Buteux elementary school. Also on Thursday, a security officer made sure that the children did not venture into the forest.

“For this week, as a precaution, we will avoid the path near the forest. […] The entire school team will provide increased surveillance and remain vigilant when students are outside,” the facility’s Facebook page said.

The cycle path, which is a few meters from the spot where the lynx was last seen, is still well used a few hours after its passage; no one seems afraid.

While it’s rare to see this type of beast in the middle of the city, their presence isn’t a threat.

“Enthusiasm for trapping, much less developed in Quebec, is allowing once-endangered animals to thrive. The urban phenomenon occurs mainly in winter [avec] Food that is no longer available,” explains the founder of the Cécropia Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, Maxime Descôteaux.

In the middle of the rut, the animal moves very quickly, even over long distances. Everything indicates that he would have left the sector.

Pay attention to your four-legged friends in the next few days. Mr Descôteaux recommends not letting cats loose and tying dogs on a leash to prevent them attacking the animal when it comes back.

By keeping a good distance, it’s more the moment to seize this chance to immortalize his passage.
