Maria Bethania
247 Singer Maria Bethânia performed at the Jardins do Marquês festival in Portugal last Saturday (1) and expressed her delight at the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE)’s decision to make Jair Bolsonaro (PL) ineligible for the next eight years.
During her performance, Bethânia moved the audience by singing the song “Cálice” by Chico Buarque and celebrated the verdict: “Ineligible. Eight years old. Long live Brazil!” The song, composed during the military dictatorship, refers to the authoritarian regime’s restrictions on freedom of expression.
Bolsonaro, now ineligible to vote, received the conviction on Friday (30th) by a vote of 5 to 2 over the attacks he launched on Brazil’s electoral system during a meeting with ambassadors in July 2022. Over the next eight years, beginning in 2022, he will no longer be able to participate in the 2024, 2026, 2028 and 2030 elections.
