Prohiben en Francia manifestaciones frente al Consejo Constitucional

In Brazil, 25 people have been sentenced to prison for the acts of January 8th

This figure was reached after the Federal Supreme Court (STF), in its latest analysis, found a majority in favor of punishing five more defendants for their intervention in the coup episodes of the date blacked out in national history.

Fabricio de Moura Gomes, Moises dos Anjos, Jorginho Cardoso de Azevedo, Rosana Maciel Gomes and Osmar Hilbrand were sentenced to prison and a fine with more than half of the votes, but there is still no consensus on the length of each sentence.

The speaker, Minister Alexandre de Moraes, proposed arresting the defendants with prison sentences ranging from 14 to 17 years. He was followed by judges Carmen Lucía, Días Toffoli and Luiz Fux.

Judges Cristiano Zanin and Edson Fachin partially followed the rapporteur’s vote and prescribed sentences of between 11 and 15 years.

The votes of lawyers Gilmar Mendes, Kassio Nunes Marques, André Mendonça and the president of the court, Luís Roberto Barroso, were missing.

The five detainees are accused of, among other things, armed criminal organization, violent abolition of the democratic constitutional state, coup and damage to property.

The five convicted defendants were arrested on January 8 by the military police at the Planalto Palace (headquarters of the executive branch) and, together with the other convicts, must pay 30 million reais (about six million dollars) in compensation for the looting of public buildings.

Judicial sources also confirmed that gospel singer Fernanda Rodrigues de Oliveira, who was imprisoned for encouraging coup attempts, was provisionally released by De Moraes.

The so-called muse of the demonstrations has been imprisoned since August 17 for sharing a video on her social media profile with other content producers in which she called on people to take part in anti-democratic actions.

Despite the decision, De Moraes noted the use of electronic anklets, the cancellation of the passport, the ban on the use of digital platforms and other restrictions on freedom.

The interpreter, who became infamous for singing the “anthem of the demonstrations,” must also appear in court every Monday. Failure to comply with any of these measures will result in the conviction being annulled and a return to prison.

Calling for military intervention and rejecting the seizure of power by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, radical supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022) violently broke in and looted the seats of the National Congress, the STF and the Planalto on January 8th. .
