The National Police have arrested a 23-year-old young man over the death of a man who was celebrating a bachelor party in Burgos. Forensic analysis revealed that the victim suffered an “unexpected attack with a very strong blow” in Plaza de la Flora, a party district in the capital Burgos. Investigators believe the attack may have been triggered because the fatal victim, 32, was from Valladolid.
State police reported on Sunday that the incident, which occurred in the early hours of this Friday through Saturday, led to the arrest of the young man as the suspected perpetrator of the death. The events occurred late at night in the central square near the cathedral, where there are numerous entertainment venues. The victim's death was initially ruled an accident as initial witness statements revealed “no indication that the deceased had suffered a possible attack”. After the forensic analysis and the recording of witness statements by the Provincial Brigade of Criminal Investigation, consideration began to be given to the possibility that third parties may have intervened, the National Police reported in a press release.
Investigators are still working to determine the motivation for the attack, although it currently appears that “a resident of Valladolid may have been the trigger,” they explain. The victim was in Burgos celebrating a loved one's bachelor party. Valladolid and Burgos have had a strong rivalry for several years, which has intensified for football reasons after Real Valladolid and Burgos CF met in the second division in recent times, such as this season.
The first calls to 112 in Burgos were received around five a.m. Friday to Saturday reporting that a person had fallen in Plaza de la Flora. Local police patrols, state police patrols and an ambulance with medical personnel went there but were unable to help the victim and he eventually died.
The police had difficulty clarifying the circumstances of the death because the first interviewees gave no indication of possible attacks. “After managing to identify several of the young people who were in the area at the time of death, this was determined late last night [sábado] that the victim had suffered an unexpected attack with a very strong blow, which led to his death almost instantly,” explains this police.
The identification and arrest of the 23-year-old young man, a resident of Burgos, took place in the early hours of this Sunday. Investigators highlighted the “difficulty of identifying the youth involved and ensuring that they clearly remembered the events,” given the timing at which they occurred and the fact that many of them had been drinking alcohol. The arrested person will be taken into custody after the police report is completed.

Valladolid and Burgos defend peaceful coexistence
In the afternoon, the city councils of Valladolid and Burgos released a joint statement expressing their “strong condemnation of any act of violence.” In the text, the mayor of Valladolid Jesús Julio Carnero and the resident of Burgos, Cristina Ayala, both from the PP, consider the use of force “in any situation and in any place” to be “inadmissible”. “Valladolid and Burgos advocate peaceful coexistence and respect for the basic rules of good neighborliness,” they add. The city councilors also convey their affection and that of their cities to the family and relatives of the deceased and praise the quick action of the security forces and organs. After learning of the incident, Carnero said he was “horrified” by the death of the Valladolid man, while Ayala described the attack as a “hate crime.”
The President of Castilla y León, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, joined the councilors' joint statement and expressed his wish that the incident be resolved “as quickly as possible.” For his part, the Minister of Transport and former mayor of Valladolid, Óscar Puente, praised “the high vision” of the declaration of the city councilors involved. “These settings are necessary 365 times [dÃas] a year. Not just when an accident happens,” he added in a message on the social network X (formerly Twitter). Both Mañueco and Puente have expressed their affection and support for the victim's relatives.
