A bridge under construction collapsed today in western Greece near the city of Patras: one person died, two people are missing and five injured. The Greek media report
Greek TV ERT reports that part of the bridge has collapsed in the area of Haradros, at the entrance to the Patras ring road, where construction work has been going on for two years. The structure is part of two twin bridges, each measuring 167 and 169 meters in length for each mode of transport, but this poses structural suitability issues. Restoration work began in 2021 and cost over 6.5 million euros.
According to Greek TV channel Ert, rumors originate from the rubble of the collapsed bridge in Patras. Rescuers also use a drone. A controlled demolition of part of the entrance structure to the Patras ring road was scheduled for today, but there were five or six people under the bridge, probably Roma, who had gone there to collect metal. President of the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization Efthymios Lekkas said the accident happened during the demolition.
