Édouard Doyon, an ardent supporter of the Rouge et Or, swapped red for blue when he attended his favorite team’s games with his parents, who still have season tickets at PEPS, and he is very proud of his new colors.
“It’s always special to play at PEPS and it gives me a strange feeling,” said the Université de Montréal Carabins marauder. When I was very young I went to the Rouge et Or games with my parents, but now I proudly wear the blue.
“My father will be sitting in the same place, wearing his blue sweater, surrounded by Rouge et Or supporters, to encourage me to pursue Doyon, whose brother Louis-Félix wears the colors of the Concordia Stingers. At first his friends didn’t understand why he wore blue, but he told them his son played for the Carabins. »
The Doyon brothers were then students at the Petit Séminaire de Québec (now Collège François-de-Laval) and good friends of the eldest son of the in-house announcer at Rouge et Or, Christian Côté, whom they saw again during the summer season during their visits to Quebec . “If I have a good play, Christian will try to announce it. »
New experience
After his college career with the Limoilou Titans, Doyon was recruited by a few teams before choosing the Blues. “Laval had recruited me, but I wanted to have a new experience and stand out from the crowd,” he explained. I wanted to be independent. There was also good contact with Marco [Iadeluca] and Denis [Touchette]. »
A year later, Louis-Félix also traveled to the metropolis to study cinema at Concordia. The two crossed swords on September 1 in a match that ended in the Blues’ favor. “We talk regularly during the season, but prefer to stay in our own camp, which explains why we don’t live together. »
Starting position
With the departure of Julien Le Guéhennec, who ended his university career, Doyon won the battle for the starting safety position in training camp. “It’s a different perspective that I appreciate, but you never know what can happen,” he concluded. There are good athletes and my position is not set in stone. In the third year, I understand the system better and my efforts have paid off. I wanted to be prepared for every opportunity that came my way. »
Last year Doyon made his first career start in the Dunsmore Cup. Some defenders had died in action. “Having attended several games at PEPS in the past, I knew what to expect. »
Marco Iadeluca is happy with Doyon’s performance since the start of the season. “He’s a hard-working guy who has a good football mind,” the Carabins head coach said. He’s a good general. He did well in the Dunsmore Cup, had a good camp and won the job. »
