The Ukrainian port city of Mariupol is highly competitive. Chechen leader Kadyrov is said to be there to boost the morale of Russian troops. Russian television is even publishing photos showing Kadyrov with General Mordvichev – whom Ukraine has declared dead.

According to Russian media reports, the ruler of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, traveled to the besieged Ukrainian port of Mariupol to boost the morale of the fighters. “Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov is in Mariupol to increase the fighting spirit of our fighters,” Chechen minister Akhmed Dudayev told Russian state news agency Ria Novosti. The latter published a photo of Kadyrov with about 20 Chechen fighters.

According to Dudayev, Kadyrov, 45, was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Officially, Kadyrov belongs to the National Guard and previously held the rank of major general.

Also in the photo were Deputy Adam Delimkhanov and a boy. Russian television also showed footage allegedly showing Kadyrov meeting Lieutenant General Andrei Mordvichev in Mariupol. This is one of the generals killed in the fighting, according to Ukrainian authorities. The time of recordings cannot be verified.

“New phase of terror against Mariupol”

According to the minister, Kadyrov will help adjust Mariupol’s “liberation” strategy. Kadyrov himself wrote on Telegram that the “cleansing” of the port city bombed by “Nazi bandits” was “in full swing”. He promised that Mariupol “will be completely freed in a very short time”.

Mariupol has been under siege by Russian troops for weeks. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, nearly 100,000 people in the city are without access to water, food and electricity. Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry wrote on Twitter that the Russian army launched a “new phase of terror against Mariupol” and kidnapped around 6,000 people to Russian camps.
