The head of the Pediatric Rehabilitation Department of the National Rehabilitation Institute said in a seminar on the subject that these patients may have a physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairment, warning that the various obstacles to accessing services or infrastructure hinder their free development can hinder society.
However, the institute responsible for this specialty offers services for these people with disabilities, especially with motor, sensory, visual and hearing problems. In 2022, 187,735 patients were treated free of charge in outpatient consultations.
The specialist pointed out that the main causes of disability among patients coming to the institute are fractures, accidents and neurological diseases. In addition, pediatric patients with congenital problems that can lead to vision and sensory disorders are cared for.
For his part, the head of the Department of Labor and Educational Rehabilitation, Jorge Hernández, explained that disability is a health condition that can be the result of an illness or an accident.
He said that disabilities are classified into physical, mental, intellectual, psychosocial, multiple, sensory, auditory and visual, and in terms of bodily functions they can be mild, moderate, severe and complete, temporary and permanent.
He pointed out that the obstacles faced by these people are of an infrastructural and technological nature and are mainly related to the attitudes of citizens and the lack of public measures for their full development.
