Hundreds of people took part in a demonstration in New York this Friday (27) demanding a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The demonstrators gathered at Grand Central Terminal, a major train station in the city.

According to the Associated Press, several protesters were arrested by police and taken to the police station. The New York police did not say how many people were arrested.

The New York Times newspaper reported that the demonstration was organized by the Jewish Voice for Peace movement at a time when Israel was intensifying its bombing in the Gaza Strip.

Protesters entered the station’s main lobby with banners demanding an immediate ceasefire and freedom for Palestinians. Some participants dressed in black wore Tshirts that read “not in our name.”

“Hundreds of Jews and friends take control of Grand Central Station in a historic protest calling for a ceasefire,” the advocacy group Jewish Voice for Peace said on social media.

Passengers who wanted to board locally were advised to look for public transport at another station.

Last week, another protest in Washington led to the arrest of 300 people for illegal demonstrations at the Capitol, according to authorities.
