In Peru, new elections will be held in 2024

In the context of violent protests in the country, Peru’s parliament voted on Tuesday for early elections in April 2024. MEPs voted 93 to 30, with one abstention, to advance the elections from 2026 to 2024. current President, Dina Boluarte, handed over power to the winner of the general elections.

Peru has been gripped by unrest across the country since the overthrow and arrest of President Pedro Castillo on Dec. Protesters protest Castillo’s disempowerment and demand the resignation of his successor Boluarte.

They are also demanding that Parliament be dissolved and new elections be held immediately. More than 20 people were killed during the protests. The early elections are an attempt to contain the crisis.
