An extraordinary weather phenomenon fascinated many Quebecers on Sunday afternoon when a rainbow in the shape of a circle could be seen around the sun for several minutes.
The TVANouvelles.ca team received some images of the weather phenomenon in different cities in the south of the province.
The question that is currently on everyone’s lips: what is this meteorological phenomenon?
It’s a solar halo, confirms meteorologist Gilles Brien.
“The phenomenon occurs in the presence of cirrus-like clouds of ice crystals at high altitudes. Sun halos sometimes herald rain, but not this time,” he explains to TVA Nouvelles.
“The cloud system […] runs south of the province due to a well-established pressure ridge across central Quebec.
Here are some footage from TVANouvelles.ca. Most of the images were taken in the early afternoon in the greater Montreal area.
