Seven Laval families found themselves on the streets last Friday because their homes were completely ransacked by a tenant who wanted to build bunker housing.

These displaced people urgently needed to find new accommodation. Some were looked after by the Red Cross, others are staying with family members or friends.

The perpetrator's clandestine work weakened the structure of the building, which became a security risk and resulted in the eviction of all residents.

According to reports, the construction project began several months ago.

In fact, last March the owner noticed the first dirt being dumped outside and the construction of a small shed.

The defaulting tenant is also said to have violated several building regulations.

For this reason, the owner has opened a file with the Administrative Housing Tribunal (TAL). However, the main participant in this case did not appear when summoned by the court.

When the owner was able to enter the house last fall, he noticed the extent of the damage: new flooring hid the existence of construction work for an underground shelter.

Last week, a new inspection of the apartment was possible, accompanied by the Police of the City of Laval (SPL), to evict the problematic tenant, who was arrested on January 4 and remains in custody.

He now faces three charges, including negligent storage of a firearm, and is expected to appear in court on Monday.
