Nine people were injured in a pileup involving around 100 cars on an icy highway in eastern China on Friday, state media reported, showing scenes of chaos.

The official CCTC channel broadcast images showing cars intertwined, one thrown up into the air, others shrunk into piles of twisted metal.

The road in Suzhou, a city about an hour's drive west of Shanghai, is littered with broken glass as orange-clad rescue workers weave between vehicles and onlookers crowd together.

According to a WeChat message from local traffic police, no one was killed in the collision, but three people were hospitalized with injuries and six others suffered minor scratches.

Traffic has been restored following the accident, which occurred around 7:00 a.m. local time (23:00 GMT), the statement said.

But “due to the cool and rainy weather, roads have become slippery and traffic conditions are complicated,” police added, urging motorists to exercise caution.

Weather authorities renewed a low temperature warning for large areas of southern China earlier this week after weeks of extreme winter conditions across the country.

Due to the lack of strict safety controls, traffic accidents occur frequently in China.

In December 2022, there was a pile-up involving at least 200 cars in the central province of Henan caused by thick fog, resulting in one person being killed.
