Contrary to initial forecasts, the left-wing nationalist Social Democrats led by former pro-Russian Prime Minister Robert Fico have won the parliamentary elections in Slovakia.
Slovakia’s early elections were won by former Prime Minister Robert Fico’s Smer-SD party. With a count of almost 100%, he received 23% of the votes, Slovakia’s TV Ta3 reported. Voter turnout was almost 67.4%, the highest since 2002. The progressive Slovak formation took second place with 18% and did not confirm the election polls that showed them as winners. Peter Pellegrini, whose Voice-Sd came third with 15%, has already congratulated Fico and offered himself as a partner for coalition talks. “It would be logical for Fico to be the first to approach our party to negotiate a government,” Pellegrini told reporters. Seven parties enter parliament, including the Slovak National Party (SNS).
The former prime minister attacked the EU and NATO and rejected any further military aid to Kiev.
