Beatings, scuffles, insults, resignations and tears… After unbelievable scenes in the House of Commons and Downing Street, the government and the British Conservative Party appear to be on the way to total self-destruction.

There is definitely something rancid about Tory tea. The circus we have become accustomed to surrounding Britain’s Conservative Party turned Wednesday night into what journalist Tom Bradby described as “absolute, utter and abject chaos” at the opening of ITV’s evening news.

The Parliament of Westminster, temple of democracy and of the oldest traditions, but also the quietest and most civilized, was the scene of absolutely bewildering scenes. Tory ministers, including Jacob Rees-Mogg and Therese Coffey, shoved, insulted and violently urged Tory MPs to vote what the government told them to do.

A Labor opposition amendment was voted on calling for an outright ban on shale gas exploitation, while Liz Truss’ government has expressed its inclination to authorize it. Many Conservative MPs had announced they would vote in favor of this amendment, while opposition to any attempt at hydraulic fracturing is strong in some of their constituencies.
