India: A new well is dug for 41 workers trapped in tunnels

(ANSA-AFP) – DEHRADUN, November 20 – Rescuers in India once again raced against time to free the 41 men trapped in a road tunnel for nine days as they prepared to dig an entirely new well , after previous efforts failed. Excavators have continued to remove earth, concrete and debris from the tunnel under construction in the northern Himalayan state of Uttarakhand since November 12 after part of the tunnel collapsed. But efforts were slowed by falling debris and repeated failures of heavy drilling equipment. Abhishek Ruhela, a senior local official, assured that the route for the new drilling site to provide access to the workers was three-quarters constructed.

“Up to 900 meters of the 1,200-meter-long road under construction for the tunnel drilling has been completed,” Ruhela told AFP. “All efforts are being made,” Uttarakhand Prime Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami assured today, stressing that “the workers trapped in the tunnel are safe.” (ANSA-AFP).
