NEW DELHI, 24th November (RHC) – India this Thursday in New Delhi kicks off a celebration of the International Year of Millet 2023, a crop whose cultivation provides a rich source of protein, fiber, minerals, iron and calcium.

Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar will attend the event, All India Radio reported.

High Commissioners and Ambassadors to India from more than 60 countries are expected to attend the ceremony.

The main goal is to raise awareness of Indian Millet and collaborate with other nations for a successful global celebration next year.

Recently, at the G-20 summit in Bali, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the benefits of this vegetable and said it could help solve the global problem of malnutrition and hunger.

Modi stressed that India is promoting natural agriculture and repopulating nutritious and traditional grains like millet to achieve sustainable food security.

The ruler urged celebrating the International Year of Millet in 2023 with great enthusiasm to raise awareness of the health benefits of this ancient food.

According to United Nations projections, the world population will reach 8.5 billion by 2030 and 9.7 billion by 2050.

In such a situation, there is a need for increased production of food grains to meet the food demands and needs of the world’s rapidly growing population.

It is estimated that more than 90 million people in Africa and Asia depend on millet for their diet.

This plant is increasingly recognized as a climate friendly plant with tremendous nutritional and health benefits as it is a rich source of protein, fiber, minerals, iron and calcium.

India is a major millet producer, accounting for 80 percent of Asia’s production and 20 percent globally. (Source:PL)
