More than 50 people have died from adulterated alcoholic beverages in the Indian state of Bihar. It is not the first case: the poor, in particular, resort to poisonous drinks in India, where alcohol is sometimes prohibited.
At least 53 people have died after drinking adulterated liquor in India. A special police team has started investigating the case in the northeastern state of Bihar, local police said.
Some people would continue to receive medical treatment. The first victims were hospitalized on Tuesday with stomach cramps, vomiting and blurred vision.
Attacks have been carried out across Saran district over the past two days, a government official told NDTV. More than 4,000 liters of alcohol were seized. 126 suspected drug dealers were arrested.
Alcohol ban since 2016
In the state of Bihar, the consumption, sale and production of alcoholic beverages have been prohibited since 2016. In India, hundreds of people, mostly poor, die every year because they drink adulterated beverages. These are cheaper than commercially produced ones, but often contain methanol or other substances that can cause severe poisoning.
