NEW DELHI, 16th June (RHC) – India on Thursday registered 12,213 new cases of Covid-19, raising the total number of infections to 43,257,730 since January 2020.

It is the first time in 111 days that the daily number of new infections in the country has exceeded 10,000, according to statistics from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Also, another 11 people died from the disease in the last 24 hours and now the official death count from this cause is 524,803.

Sick or active cases of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes this infection, also saw a high increase, and as of this Thursday there are 58,215 patients nationwide.

But despite the alarming numbers, experts have not yet declared the beginning of a fourth wave of the pandemic.

dr Samiran Panda, additional director-general of the Indian Council of Medical Research and head of its Epidemiology and Communicable Diseases Department, stressed that the recent surge in infections cannot be described as such because the country’s health services are not overwhelmed.

dr For his part, Rajeev Jayadevan, co-chair of the Indian Medical Association’s Covid-19 task force, said that no new variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus had been detected.

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology in the city of Kanpur predicted earlier this month that a fourth wave of Covid-19 would sweep the country from June 22, peaking on August 23 and ending in late October. (Source: Latin Press)
