Indian railways make their own forged wheels

So far, the South Asian country has been importing various types of forged wheels for use in its locomotives and wagons from the United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Brazil, Romania, Japan, China, Ukraine and Russia since the 1960s.

Faced with delays in the arrival of forged wheels due to the current war between Ukraine and Russia, New Delhi began building a plant with a capacity to manufacture 80,000 units over the next 20 years.

Once the new facility is constructed, the demand for forged wheels for locomotives and wagons will be met from local sources as part of the government’s Make In India initiative.

Currently, due to the crisis between Russia and Ukraine, all of this line’s needs are being met from China.

With the introduction of more and more high-speed trains in the South Asian country, the demand for forged wheels is expected to increase to 200,000 by 2026.
