(CNN) First it was the Stanford Cardinals — then it was the Indiana Hoosiers.
March Madness lives up to its name as Indiana became the second No. 1 to be eliminated from the NCAA women’s basketball tournament in consecutive days after losing to the No. 9 Miami Hurricanes 70-68 on Monday.
Despite a 68-68 tie with a Yarden Garzon three-pointer with just eight seconds left, Indiana couldn’t keep up when Miami forward Destiny Harden’s floater put three seconds from time and put the Hurricanes ahead, where they held on to the last buzzer.
The upset result was the first time since 1998 that multiple No. 1 seeds have fallen ahead of the Sweet 16 in the women’s class 9. Notre Dame beat Texas Tech in the second round.
According to ESPN, the four No. 1-seeded teams who have lost in the men’s and women’s tournaments so far this year are the most frequently matched top-seeded teams to lose in the first two rounds since the men’s tournament was expanded in 1985.
Miami, who will face the No. 4 Villanova Wildcats in the next round, is back in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1992.
“It still doesn’t feel real,” Miami forward Lola Pendande, who led the team with 19 points and seven rebounds, later told reporters. “When we finished the game, I was like, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe it. We’re here. We’re really here.'”
Harden hits the game-winning shot against Indiana.
Miami’s big win over Indiana came a day after the school’s men’s team defeated the Indiana men’s team. According to ESPN, it is the tenth time a program has defeated the same school in both the women’s and men’s NCAA tournaments in the same year, and the third time both wins have come in the same round.
After Monday’s action, the women’s Sweet 16 match-ups are ready.
South Carolina, No. 1, meets UCLA No. 4, Notre Dame, No. 3, Maryland, No. 2, Ole Miss, No. 8, meets Louisville, No. 5, and Colorado, No. 6 , battling against Iowa, No. 2 for a spot in the Elite Eight.
Elsewhere, Miami takes on Villanova, No. 3 LSU meets No. 2 Utah, No. 1 Virginia Tech will take on No. 4 Tennessee and No. 3 Ohio State will face-off with 11-time NCAA champion UConn.
