Center Grove 43, Lawrence North 26
IHSAA football highlights: Center Grove 43, Lawrence North 26
The Wildcats pushed the Trojans and pulled off a fourth-quarter upset before the state champions went full throttle.
Three takeaways from Class 6A runner-up Center Grove’s 43-26 win over Lawrence North on Friday night.
Course of the game: It wasn’t a play the home crowd particularly liked or agreed with, but Lawrence North quarterback Montez Jones’ 10-yard touchdown pass to Davion Chandler at the end of the first half was a thing of beauty. Chandler caught the ball as it fell backwards in the right corner of the end zone. His right foot was on the ground when he pounced on the ball with 5.7 seconds left, giving the Wildcats a 19-15 halftime lead. Great catch from Chandler who had a great game.
Turning point: It wasn’t necessarily a play, but a ride. After Lawrence North took a 26-22 lead with 8:48 minutes left on an 8-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Dantu Gardner Jr., Center Grove took over at its own 35 and marched 65 yards in just five plays. Matthew Yoder’s 4-yard touchdown run with seven minutes left gave the Trojans a 29-26 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, the Wildcats fumbled the ball back to Center Grove, which scored three plays later on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Cherry to Noah Coy to take a 10-point lead.
Outstanding Artist: Ryan Cook was sidelined early in the game with an injury, leaving Yoder to carry the load for Center Grove’s ground game. The senior got the job done with 30 carries for 143 yards and two touchdowns. He has continually improved over the course of the season. —Kyle Neddenriep

Danville 21, Western Boone 7
Turning point: Danville’s second goal line score of the game. There were seven minutes left in the fourth quarter, and if Western Boone had scored, the Stars would have been just one point away with plenty of time left. The Warriors’ goal line was absolutely crucial and allowed Danville to win.
Course of the game: Western Boone special teams player Mason Tomes’ 85-yard kick returns a touchdown. He weaved his way through several defenders to the house, and in the end that was the only thing that prevented a shutout for the Stars.
Ethan Wooten ran the ball 3 yards for the Warriors’ third score of the night and first of the second half.

Player of the game: I might as well make it the entire Danville defense. They allowed 0 points from Western Boone’s offense, including two successful and game-winning goal line stands – one in the second quarter and another in the fourth. They also had an interception in the third quarter and a crucial fumble recovery with two minutes to play to seal the win for the Warriors. –Chloe Peterson
Westfield 28, Fishers 14
IHSAA football highlights: Westfield 28, Fishers 14
The Shamrocks earned an impressive win over the Tigers in Week 8 of the Hoosier Crossroads Conference.
GAME PLAY: Westfield had two explosive touchdown plays in the contest, the last being a 70-yard pass from quarterback Jackson Gilbert to tight end Maximus Nosler. Nosler caught a pass in a short cross pattern, made it to the sideline and fended off several tackles on the way to the end zone. Nosler then caught a two-point conversion pass to give the Shamrocks a 21-7 lead early in the fourth quarter.
TURNING POINT: On the Fishers’ possession before Nosler’s touchdown catch, the Tigers pushed deep into Westfield territory, scored a first down at the 17 and appeared poised to take the lead.
On third down, Fishers receiver JonAnthony Hall was caught after a catch for a 2-yard loss, setting up 4th-and-6 at the 13th. The play featured Tigers sophomore quarterback Gage Sturgill, making his first start in place of injured senior Bennett Gorak – could have run for the first down but continued to look for a receiver when a heavy pass rush came his way came. His subsequent pass failed incomplete.
Four plays later, Gilbert and Nosler scored the game-winning goal.
OUTSTANDING ARTIST: Picking one from this competition would not do justice to the comprehensive efforts of both teams. For Westfield, Gilbert completed 6 of 11 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns without turning the ball over. However, the Westfield defense came up with big plays of its own, including an interception by junior defensive back Drew Law that stopped a Fishers drive that reached the Shamrock 37 midway through the third quarter, while the pass rush stymied the Tigers as they took it reached the Westfield 17 in the fourth quarter.
It would be appropriate to mention Sturgill as a standout player playing his first varsity game. He completed 13 of 27 passes (several in high winds) for 199 yards – including a 29-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter. –Lewis Bagley
