High alert on the Indonesian island of Java, where Mount Semeru volcano has erupted and ash plumes reach nearly two kilometers into the atmosphere, prompting a tsunami alert in Japan. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Preparedness has “raised Mount Semeru’s vulnerability status from level three to level four (the highest level).” “This means that the population is under threat and the activity of the volcano has increased,” center spokesman Hendra Gunawan told Kompas TV.
