Now it's official: 2023 will be the hottest year ever recorded in Brazil.

The information comes from a survey conducted by the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) with data from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), published this Tuesday (09).

According to the Inmet study, in our country, nine of the twelve months of 2023 had average monthly temperatures above average, with an emphasis on September, where the temperature was 1.6 ° C above expectations (above the 1991/ 2020). historical average).

These records that are above or below expectations are called anomalies because they deviate from climatological normal a value that is calculated using at least 30 years of data to determine what is normal for that location during each period of the year is.

Looking at the entire year, the average temperature in 2023 was 24.92 °C, 0.69 °C above the historical average of 24.23 °C (see graphic below).

Experts explain that these exceptional temperatures are a reflection of global warming and the effects of the El Niño climate phenomenon.
