‘Creepy’ 1970s lingerie ad that could never be shown on TV today: Aussies shocked at ‘insanely sexist’ lingerie ads: ‘Horrible to think that’s acceptable’
A 1978 Australian TV advert for women’s lingerie has resurfaced online, sending social media users into a frenzy for its “creepy” and voyeuristic tone.
The commercial features women in everyday situations, their skirts ripping or flying up to reveal their knickers in front of groups of men who yell at them.
The “insanely sexist” ad provided to Sexy Nix’s “Sexy Legs” underwear resurfaced on Twitter and TikTok this week, to a frosty reception.
The women whose skirts are torn in the footage can be seen getting off the bus, shopping for groceries, or waiting at traffic lights.
Men gather to stare and objectify her, shouting “Hello, sexy legs!” while their skirts fly up to reveal their Sexy Nix lingerie.

The Australian Kitsch account, which shared the disturbing footage, captioned it: “Not a parody. It’s a real lingerie ad from 1978.”
Followers flocked to the comments section to slam the sexist commercial, saying brands would never get away with something like this these days.
“Awful to think this was acceptable just 45 years ago,” said one, while another wrote, “So disgusting!”

“It’s insane how women have been portrayed and treated,” said one shocked viewer, before another simply wrote, “I’m sick.”
Someone else recalled her experience of ad horror growing up and said that at the time she encouraged male misbehavior.
“Oh god I actually remember that ad and years after that men were screaming, ‘Hello, sexy legs!’ as if it were even welcome,’ they said.
