The deal was not supposed to go through from the start. Now much is clear.
The NHL corrected that mistake on Wednesday by announcing that the trade of Yevgeny Dadonov between the Golden Knights and the Ducks is canceled after reviewing the matter with all concerned over the past few days.
From the NHL statement on Wednesday:
“The National Hockey League announced today that it has invalidated the trade of player Yevgeny Dadonov on Monday from Vegas to Anaheim. The deal cannot be done because Dadonov’s contract includes a limited no-trade clause that is not enforced.”
There were other levels to the case, but for the NHL Players Association, it wasn’t all that difficult. From his point of view, the fact that there was evidence that the 10-team no-trade clause was still in place and included Ducks made for only one possible outcome: the trade had to be voided because the player did not withdraw his ban. trade clause.
But what the NHLPA did not appreciate was the fact that Dadonov was spinning in the wind for a couple of days. And I’m sure there could have been other players in his place who would have understandably conceded and decided to settle for a trade instead of dealing with the awkwardness of it all.
So kudos to Dadonov, because he stood up not only for his own rights, but also in many respects for the rights of NHL players who, in good faith, agree on a ban on the exchange.
Here is what we think happened as a result of studying this issue.
