Jewish schools are closed because they cannot guarantee the safety of students and religious gatherings can only take place under the protection of armed guards, said the text signed by representatives of 22 countries and international organizations such as the Organization of American States (OAS).

The list includes ambassadors and ministers from countries such as the United States, Germany, Argentina, the United Kingdom, France, Spain and Italy.

Also signed are David Fernandez Puyana, Ambassador and Delegate of UNESCO (United Nations Science Educational Organization) and Katharina Von Schnurbein, Coordinator of the European Commission to Combat AntiSemitism.

Attacks on synagogues and Jews

The text also states that during this time, synagogues and other Jewish places were attacked and that antiSemitism online saw an unprecedented rise.

“In some cities, Jews are harassed and attacked on the streets. Posters depicting captured hostages will be defaced and torn down.”

“History has taught us that in such moments we must raise our voices and not be indifferent,” the authorities added in the statement.

The statement also asks

  • Protecting Jewish communities and monitoring antiSemitic acts at universities;
  • Supporting sports associations, other religious communities and the cultural sector in combating antiSemitism;
  • Social network measures to curb hate speech and antiSemitic disinformation on virtual platforms.
