Today the United Nations celebrates International Clean Energy Day, proclaimed by the UN General Assembly to commemorate the founding of the International Renewable Energy Agency in 2009.

By creating the date, the UN underlines the importance of the world moving towards more modern, affordable and sustainable energy systems that help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda through the global energy transition towards so-called clean energies to reach.

Renewable, clean or green energies are those that are obtained from inexhaustible natural resources such as sunlight or that constantly regenerate in a short period of time.

These sources do not produce greenhouse gas emissions or harmful air pollutants, helping to reduce environmental impact and climate change.

Among clean energies, photovoltaics stands out, obtained through solar panels that convert sunlight into electricity.

Likewise, wind energy, which is generated by the power of the wind through turbines that generate electricity, and hydropower, which is generated by the force of moving water through dams or reservoirs.

Likewise, geothermal energy is obtained from the earth's internal heat and uses the natural heat beneath the earth's surface to generate electricity or heat.

Biomass, which is obtained from organic material such as agricultural and forestry waste or organic waste, is also used to generate thermal or electrical energy.

These energy sources are sustainable in the long term and help reduce dependence on fossil fuels and promote a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy system.
