International Conference on Food Self Sufficiency in Mexico

Almost all who support the idea are social and community, academic, legislative, federal and state governments of Mexico and some countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. The event will take place in Ciudad de Juárez, Oaxaca and will host more than a thousand guests.

The conveners are about twenty official institutions in Mexico, including the ministries of agriculture, environment, health and well-being.

According to the organizers, the following thematic priorities will be addressed: Agro-ecological change and other related approaches: successful national public policies; and Relevant experiences with agroecological transition and other related approaches: small and medium-sized producers.

The experiences with the substitution of glyphosate and transgenic seeds are also analyzed: advances in public policy, the actions of organizations and movements and alliances; and popular actions in favor of agroecology: organizations, movements and strategic alliances.

Further priorities include transforming the regulatory framework of agricultural and food systems into a framework for development cooperation in a multipolar world; Folk, peasant and indigenous education and communication and other pedagogies: Agroecological learning communities with territorial approaches; and the agroecological transition and its relationship to other challenges in the field and future prospects.

They add that representatives from the Americas, Africa, Asia and Europe will address transforming food systems to be fair, sustainable, healthy and competitive.

The aim is to disseminate knowledge and promote the exchange of experiences on public policies, regulatory frameworks and strategic actions of governments, parliaments, congresses, universities, research centers and social movements.

Farming and urban practices aimed at transforming food systems to be fair, sustainable, healthy and competitive also stem from agroecological transition and other related approaches.

The conference includes field visits on November 28th and 29th, while keynote conferences, dialogue tables, exhibitions and sales of agroecological products will take place on November 30th and December 1st.

On December 2, a declaration will be announced, the result of agreements and consensus, and the Agrobiodiversity Fair will be held, coordinated by the Government of Oaxaca.
