International Day of Human Solidarity: Why it is celebrated every December 20th La Voz del Interior

2023 – HUMAN SOLIDARITY. Since 2006, the International Day of Human Solidarity has been celebrated, established by the United Nations (UN) to promote its “fundamental value to relations between peoples to promote peace, human rights and economic and social development.”

According to the United Nations, the International Day of Human Solidarity is:

  • A day to celebrate our unity in diversity;
  • A day to remind governments of their need to honor their commitments to international agreements;
  • A day to raise public awareness of the importance of solidarity;
  • A day to encourage debate on ways to promote solidarity to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, including the goal of ending poverty;
  • A day for action and seeking new initiatives to eradicate poverty.

1930 – PIPO MANCERA. Radio and television presenter José Nicolás “Pipo” Mancera, pioneer of the “omnibus” format of general interest programs in Argentina, was born in the city of Buenos Aires. The nickname “Mr. Television” he received because of the popular program Sábados Circulares, which was broadcast between 1962 and 1974.

1977 – AZUCENA VILLAFLOR. Due to the “flight of death” of the last dictatorship, more and more bodies are turning up on the beaches of the resort towns of Santa Teresita and Mar del Tuyú in Buenos Aires, including that of Azucena Villaflor, co-founder of Madres de la Plaza de Mayo. Villaflor, whose remains were identified in 2005, had been kidnapped and tortured at the Navy's illegal Higher School of Mechanics detention center.

1992 – BOCA JUNIORS. After eleven years of drought, Boca Juniors won the 1992 Apertura tournament with a 1-1 draw against San Martín de Tucumán in La Bombonera. Ricardo Solbes silenced the stadium as he scored Tucumán's goal until Claudio Benetti equalized for a Boca side led by Uruguayan Washington Tabarez.

1994 – TEQUILA EFFECT. Faced with a lack of reserves to cover payments to creditors, Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo, among other things, devalued the Mexican peso, triggering a crisis that was transmitted to the international level under the name “Tequila effect”.

2001 – WOMEN’S BRIDGE. In the Puerto Madero district, the 170 meter long and 6.20 meter wide Women's Bridge will be inaugurated on one of the docks of the old port terminal of the city of Buenos Aires. The bridge was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava Valls and depicts the image of a couple dancing tango.

2001 – FERNANDO DE LA RÚA. President Fernando De la Rúa resigns from office a day after declaring a state of siege, amid a serious social crisis and repressed protests that have left 39 dead and dozens injured.
